Prada and Axiom Space

The next chapter in Moon return spacesuit design
Prada and Axiom Space, a leader in the space industry and the creator of the first commercial orbital station, advance their groundbreaking partnership to produce NASA's new spacesuits for the Artemis III lunar mission, the first crewed Moon landing since December 1972, when the Apollo 17 mission concluded. Through Artemis, NASA and its partners will land the first woman and first person of color on the surface of the Moon.
In 2024, Axiom Space and Prada unveiled the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, marking the first milestone of their collaboration. Drawing on Prada’s expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques and innovative design, the partnership contributed to the development of the suit’s outer layer, engineered to withstand the extreme thermal conditions and micrometeoroid environment of the lunar South Pole while enabling a new era of human lunar exploration.
Today, the collaboration advances with the unveiling of the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), the high-performance inner layer worn beneath the AxEMU spacesuit. Representing the next phase of the project, the LCVG moves the focus from the suit’s protective exterior to the layer closest to the astronaut’s body, where thermal regulation, comfort and reliability are critical.
Prada’s expertise in engineered knitting, advanced materials and innovative design concepts contributed to the development of a next-generation garment created through sophisticated 3D modeling techniques and designed to support astronauts during spacewalks of up to eight hours.
