Published on the occasion of the “Machines à penser'' exhibition curated by Dieter Roelstraete, this book explores the concept of a place of shelter as a “machine for thinking”, focusing on three major philosophers of the 20th century: Theodor W. Adorno (1903 -1969), Martin Heidegger (1889 – 1976) and Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 -1951). Through the words of scholars, artists and theorists, the project explores the correlation between conditions of exile, escape and retreat and the physical or mental places that favor reflection, thought and intellectual production.
